Responsible for pursuing growth opportunities within the Small Commercial line(s) of business which contribute to profitability, competitive advantage and product management. In this role, the incumbent will perform in-depth analysis on the performance of the product, pricing and underwriting rules used to drive business through the automated underwriting platform and their influence on the financial performance of the lines. This analysis will provide insight to aid in the development and refinement of line strategies leading to profitable growth for the small commercial business unit. Organization of analytical data and development of presentations with active participation in the delivery of this material will be a key function of the position.


  • Conducts analysis of the business rules used to execute underwriting strategy within the automated underwriting platform. Monitors data to recognize patterns and analyzes trends independently.
  • Develops and executes monitoring tools to quantify impacts and measure success of line strategies executed through rules. Responsible for analyzing requests for rule changes from the field, measuring impact and making necessary changes. 
  • Communicates the results of analyses and provides recommendations to help guide the adjustment or development of strategies consistent with small commercial business objectives. Includes assisting in development of regularly scheduled management reports for portfolio analysis. Provides analytical support on cross-functional teams charged with assessing the performance of a segment of the Small Commercial portfolio and developing recommendations.  
  • Collaborates closely with Underwriting and the Regional Product Management teams. Includes collaborating with Actuarial to monitor, refine, and advance pricing segmentation to support product’s long-term relevance in the marketplace.
  • Participates in enterprise line of business projects and represents small commercial in meetings and other forums, including third party data projects.
  • Assists with Underwriting training and system testing with new rule development.
  • Possesses strong analytical ability to dissect, manage and interpret all levels of data; in-depth knowledge of the business practice and process.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.


  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or three to five years underwriting experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Small Commercial and business strategies.
  • AU, CPCU or similar designation preferred.
  • Strong technical acumen in commercial insurance sales and underwriting, and the ability to apply it to meet customer needs and solve customer issues.
  • Ability to travel on an occasional basis; work independently as well as effectively manage a project and/or lead a team, and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook. Microsoft Access, SAS and Data Mart skills would be beneficial. Fully able to understand and integrate Small Commercial vision in daily work.
