APRIL IS DISTRACTED DRIVING AWARENESS MONTH
Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group Works to Educate Businesses on Risks
RICHMOND, Va. (March 31, 2014) – Since 2010, the National Safety Council (NSC) has recognized April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Berkley Mid-Atlantic Group (BMAG) embraces this annual campaign as an opportunity to remind businesses of the hazards related to distracted driving and how to control them.
“It’s important for businesses to be aware of the risk of cell phones for their employees while driving,” said Bill Raab, director of loss prevention services for BMAG. “This includes texting and cell phone use on hands-free and handheld devices. Not only is the safety of the employee of utmost importance, but if an accident were to occur while the employee is using a cell phone and acting within the scope of his or her employment, it could have serious ramifications for the employer as well.”
BMAG encourages businesses to follow NSC guidelines and implement a cell phone policy to follow best safety practices for their employees, reduce risks and minimize liability. The NSC states that policies should include handheld and hands-free devices, all employees, all company vehicles, all company cell phones and all work-related communications — even if in a personal vehicle or on a personal cell phone.
“Having the appropriate policies and education in place can help employees understand the true expectation of them when using mobile devices,” Raab said. “Hearing that multitasking while driving is unacceptable could make all the difference for an employee glued to his or her cell phone.”
The NSC aims to dispel four myths during Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
• Myth No. 1: Drivers can multitask.
• Myth No. 2: Talking to someone on a cell phone is no different than talking to someone in a car.
• Myth No. 3: Hands-free devices eliminate the danger of cell phone use during driving.
• Myth No. 4: Drivers talking on cell phones still have a quicker reaction than those who are driving under the influence.
